Google Pixel phones ship with two layers of spam-call protection in the Phone app. The first judges calls by the number's reputation. The second, Call Screen, answers unknown calls for you and asks the caller who they are and why they are calling. This guide follows Google's own Phone app Help documentation: what each layer does, how to set them up, what Call Screen costs in attention and data, and the limits Google itself lists.
Caller ID & spam protection: the reputation layer
Per Google's support page, the setting lives at Phone app, then More options, then Settings, then Caller ID and spam. With See caller ID & spam on, you get information about callers or businesses outside your contacts, or warnings about potential spam callers. An optional Filter spam calls toggle sends suspected spam to your call history without ringing you - Google notes you do not get missed-call or voicemail notifications for filtered calls, but they remain in your call history. Google also documents the caveat that matters: if caller ID shows Suspected spam caller or Spam, the call might be spam, and a contact that is wrongly labeled can be fixed by tapping Not spam on the call.
Call Screen: asking the caller who they are
Call Screen works differently: instead of judging the number, it answers the call. Per Google, when a call is screened you see a silent notification - Screening unknown number or Screening suspicious call - with a real-time transcript while the caller explains themselves. If the screening determines the call is spam, your phone hangs up; otherwise your phone rings and shows you the caller's response. You can also tap Screen call manually on an incoming call, where Google offers suggested replies such as Is it urgent? or Report as spam. Google states screening works on-device, without Wi-Fi or mobile data, and that every screened call saves a transcript on your phone, with optional audio saving.
Choosing a protection level
Automatic screening is configured under Phone app, then Settings, then Spam and Call Screen. Google offers three levels - Maximum, Medium, and Basic protection. On Pixel 7 and above, you simply toggle Automatically screen calls; on Pixel 6 and below, you choose which caller types to screen, such as known spam, possibly faked numbers, or first-time callers.
The limits Google documents
- Contacts saved on your phone are never screened - Call Screen only handles numbers you have not saved.
- Google states not all spam is detected, so a screened or labeled call still deserves your own judgment.
- Automatic screening does not happen while roaming or during call forwarding.
- Call Screen does not work with third-party call-recording or screen-recording apps.
- Screened call information is not saved to your Google Account; transcripts stay on the phone.
- Devices with automatic Call Screen do not offer the Filter spam calls toggle - automatic screening replaces it.
Availability
Per Google's Phone app Help, automatic Call Screen is available on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Manual Call Screen is available in those countries plus several more, and on selected Android devices in the US and Canada when used with a SIM from a supported country. If you are on a Pixel in the US or Canada, both layers are available to you.
Where FilterMyCalls fits
Call Screen is strong on-device technology, and it is tied to Pixel and selected Google Phone app devices. FilterMyCalls is an AI call screener and spam blocker focused on calls that works on iPhone and Android alike: it answers unknown callers before your phone rings, asks each caller for their name and reason for calling, and shows you the response so you can answer, decline, or take a message. Setup uses conditional call forwarding through your carrier, so you keep the number and the carrier you already have.
FilterMyCalls works in the U.S. and Canada for US$8/month or US$80/year, and CA$10/month or CA$100/year in Canada. 24/7 Customer Service is included.
How to turn on Pixel spam protection and Call Screen
- 1Turn on caller ID and spam warnings
In the Phone app, tap More options, then Settings, then Caller ID and spam, and turn on See caller ID & spam.
- 2Consider Filter spam calls
On devices without automatic Call Screen, the Filter spam calls toggle sends suspected spam to your call history without ringing you or notifying you.
- 3Open Spam and Call Screen settings
In the Phone app, tap More options, then Settings, then Spam and Call Screen (labeled Call Screen on some devices).
- 4Choose a protection level
Pick Maximum, Medium, or Basic protection. On Pixel 7 and above you can simply toggle Automatically screen calls; on Pixel 6 and below you choose which caller types to screen.
- 5Screen a call manually when you want
Tap Screen call on an incoming call to see a live transcript and use suggested replies such as Is it urgent? - then block or report the number from the call history if it was spam.
Common Questions
Does Pixel Call Screen work in Canada?
Yes. Google lists Canada among the countries where automatic Call Screen is available on Pixel phones, alongside the US, UK, Ireland, and Australia. Manual Call Screen is also available on selected Android devices in the US and Canada with a SIM from a supported country.
What is the difference between Filter spam calls and Call Screen?
Filter spam calls judges the number's reputation and silently routes suspected spam to your call history. Call Screen answers the call and asks the caller who they are and why they called, then rings you with the response. Google treats them as two layers; devices with automatic Call Screen replace the filter toggle with screening.
Can Call Screen mislabel a caller?
Google's own wording is that a Suspected spam caller or Spam label means the call might be spam - the labels are warnings, not verdicts. If a known contact is wrongly flagged, Google documents tapping Not spam on the call so future calls are not flagged.
Does Call Screen use my mobile data?
No. Google states Call Screen works on-device and doesn't require Wi-Fi or mobile data to screen a call.
Does Call Screen report my calls to Google?
Google states that screened call information is not saved to your Google Account - transcripts stay on your phone unless you delete them. Separately, Google documents that numbers outside your contacts may be sent to Google to identify a business name or determine if a call is spam.
