Spam Calls vs. Scam Calls

“Spam” and “scam” calls get lumped together, but they are not the same thing — and knowing the difference helps you respond calmly to each.

What a spam call is

A spam call is unwanted but not necessarily malicious: marketing calls, automated robocalls, survey calls, or a business contacting you more than you would like. The main harm is interruption and wasted time.

What a scam call is

A scam call is a deliberate attempt to deceive you — for example, someone pretending to be your bank, a government office, or a delivery service to pressure you into sending money, sharing a one-time code, or handing over personal information. The harm is financial or identity fraud.

How screening helps with both

Call screening does not decide for you, and it cannot identify or block every unwanted call. What it does is give you a moment of context: an unknown caller is asked who they are and why they are calling before your phone rings. That pause is exactly what spam and scam callers rely on you not having.

• •For spam: a vague or missing reason is an easy signal to ignore the call.
• •For scams: seeing the stated reason first, on your terms, makes high-pressure tactics far less effective.
• •Either way: you decide whether to answer, instead of being caught off guard.

Simple rules that protect you

• •Never share passwords, banking details, or one-time codes with someone who called you.
• •If a caller creates urgency or pressure, treat that as a warning sign.
• •When in doubt, hang up and contact the company yourself using a number you already trust.
